Talks

2024

January (2024)

Dr Rhodri Jervis from UCL gave a talk on batteries to Harris Westminster school. Please see the write up of the lecture from a student newspaper:Rhodri Jervis’ talk gave me a valuable insight into both history of batteries and electricity, prospects in energy development, as well as what working in academia entails more broadly. I received advise on how to choose an undergraduate course, heard of Dr Jervis’ own experience completing a PhD, leading research, and giving lectures at UCL. I’ve learnt of the mechanism involved in manufacture of batteries, such as safety testing involved in production of Li-ion batteries, deciding upon metals used for electrodes and energy densities associated with different choices of metal. Dr Jarvis also shared his predictions on the future of market for battery power, saying that Solid State batteries may become more widely used due to their relatively high energy density and low risk of catastrophic failure, which is associated with battery explosions. During the lab talk, Dr Jervis also introduced the Voltaic Pile – one of the first experiments studying potential difference, where zinc and copper sheets were layered on top of one another to induce PD – and suggested to attempt to recreate a Voltaic Pile, which is something I might follow up on in the near future.
